Farhult Surroundings
The surroundings of Kulla
Right at the edge of Scandinavia, where forests drop sharply into the sea and the coastal breeze carries a different voice, lies Kullaberg. Not just another headland, but a compressed adventure: beech woods overlooking a sparkling sea, caves echoing ancient times, and paths along sheer cliffs that might evoke Iceland or Ireland — yet here, in southern Sweden, are untamed rather than idyllic. Accessible in about 35 km from Helsingborg or just over an hour from Malmö, after which the best way to explore is on foot.
On Foot — into the heart of Kullaberg
Kullaberg beckons hikers not to reach a destination, but to savor every step. The main route, the Kullaleden (part of Skåneleden SL 5), loops roughly 70 km from Helsingborg through Höganäs, Mölle, Arild, Josefinelust and Utvälinge. Along the way you’ll move among beech groves, sea views, and caves like Silvergrottan and Lahibiagrottan. The ascent to the summit of Håkull (187 m) offers panoramic views of both the southern and northern seas.
A recommended starting point is from Mölle to the Kullen lighthouse, passing Josefinelust — a route where cliffs dominate the horizon and porpoises often dance below in the water.
Popular side routes include:
-
Åkersberget Loop (~8 km) for breathtaking views
-
Kullagården–Caves Loop (~4.5 km) leading close to sea-level caves
-
Stage hike Arild–Mölle (~16 km) along the coast and through fishing villages
-
A short trail to Nimis/Arx, the driftwood artwork by Lars Vilks nestled in the cliffs
Birdlife — the true tenants of the skies
Kullaberg is a vital bird-protection zone under Natura 2000, hosting nesting colonies of cormorants, black-backed gulls, peregrine falcons, and seasonal migratory species.
Best vantage points include the lighthouse, summit Håkull, and the northern promontory Nabben — perfect for binocular-watching.
Freedom on two wheels along the coast
Cycling within the core protected reserve is not allowed, yet scenic high-quality bike routes run along the western flank: from Höganäs to Arild to Mölle — passing vineyards, pottery studios, and the scent of salty sea air. A wonderful day-trip opportunity following part of the Kattegattleden bike route.
Experiencing the coast from the water
Kullaberg reveals a new dimension when approached by sea. In a kayak, the cliffs tower overhead, and the caves echo with each paddle stroke. The best launch sites are the bays of Josefinelust and Ransvik. If paddling isn’t your style, boat tours from Mölle offer a chance to float along the cliffs and possibly spot harbor porpoises near the lighthouse.
Swimming — without beach fuss
There are no conventional sandy beaches here — only serene bays with crystal-clear water and white granite pebbles. Josefinelust offers transparent pools sheltered by cliffs; Ransvik is historic for Sweden’s first integrated bathing culture. Elsewhere, flat granite ledges at Nabben invite spontaneous dips and long moments of quiet listening to the sea.
On horseback — in sync with the land
For those who wish to slow down even more, rides with Kullabergs Islandshästar offer atmospheric forest trails and sunset tours toward the lighthouse — where the wind and sea mist mingle as you circle the cape. A deeply Swedish way to connect with the landscape.
Caves — shadowy rooms of antiquity
Kullaberg’s caves feel like living history:
-
Silvergrottan, shimmering with silver-like mineral sheen
-
Lahibiagrottan, rich in archaeological significance
-
Visitgrottan and Himmelstorpsgrottan, near the old Himmelstorp farm
These caves aren’t tourist traps but require navigating steep, narrow trails — sometimes even ropes. The result is a powerful, uncrowded encounter with something timeless.
When the day ends — cake, ceramics, wine
On your return to Skäret, stop at Flickorna på Skäret café for almond‑cream cakes worthy of royalty. In Höganäs, you’ll find boutique wineries offering crisp white and rosé wines, and pottery studios where every piece seems painted with the color and rhythm of the coastline.
Just be. Everything else follows.
Kullaberg doesn’t demand an itinerary, only awareness — whether you walk, cycle, paddle, ride, or simply stand amidst nature. Your part is to look. And listen to the wind.
